Bionic Vision helps People with Retinitis Pigmentosa

Earlier there is no effective treatment for people with Retinitis Pigmentosa in their late-stages as most of them turned legally blind by the age of 40 years. But now, Bionic Vision is developed to help them.

The Bionic Vision system has a camera that is attached to a pair of glasses. It transmits high-frequency radio signals to a microchip implanted in the eye. These signal are converted into electrical impulses by electrodes on the implanted chip. These impulses stimulate cells in the retina that connect to the optic nerve and are passed down along the nerves to vision processing centres of the brain. They are turned into an image there.

Bionic Vision is very helpful for people with vision impairment. It is especially helpful for the people with Retinitis Pigmentosa and age-related macular degeneration. They are the main causes of blindness worldwide. Photoreceptor cells that are vital to vision are damaged in both these conditions. But the good point is that they do not damage the optic nerve and visual cortex
